This mammoth species lived during the last Ice Age (Pleistocene Period). It was one of the last in a line of mammoth species. Today its closest surviving relative is the Asian elephant.
Carcasses of the Woolly Mammoth have been found frozen in Siberia and Alaska. This is where the mammoth hair samples come from. The largest Woolly Mammoths reached shoulder heights of 9 to 11 feet and weighed up to 6.6 tons. A newborn calf weighed about 200 lbs.
