Trilobites are a group of extinct fossil arthropods. (Modern day arthropods include insects, spiders, lobsters and centipedes.) Members of this group are easily recognized by their distinctive three-lobed, three-segmented form. Horseshoe crabs are the closest living relative of trilobites. There were over 20,000 different species of trilobites. Trilobites were exclusively marine animals and existed from the beginning of the Cambrian Period (about 542 million years ago) when they dominated the seas, to the end of the Permian Period (250 million years ago).
